Sketchbook Assignments
Bring your sketchbook to class everyday since you will be taking notes and working in your sketchbook everyday.
Class Notes
Many of the Weebly pages have notes that will be placed into your sketchbook. Notes to be copied are written in red. (ex - Write the terms and definitions in your sketchbook). It is important to copy all of the notes because you will be able to use your sketchbook during exams.
Thumbnails & Test Patterns
Each project will require that you create some planning work prior to beginning the final artwork.
STEP 1 -Thumbnails - Thumbnails are quick, small sketches that allow you to work out the placement of elements in your artwork. They are not detailed. Each one is different and you will use your favorite as the basis of your final design.
This is also a good time to do a value study. Value studies are plans about placement of darks and lights. To read more about this you can visit lwww.davidmkessler.com/blog/23789/value-studies-the-artists-essential-tool. You will be creating 3 thumbnail sketches in your sketchbook for each of the 6 concentration projects. A photograph of your thumbnail sketches will be turned in to Schoology for a grade.

How Do You Develop an Idea from a Sketch to a Finished Work?

STEP 2 - Test Patterns - You will create a test pattern for your project. This will look different depending on the style, media, and subject used in the project. The test pattern should be about the size of a 6' square or a 4"x 6" rectangle. Ideas for your test pattern include: a simplified, mini-painting of your final design, a texture study, a technique study, etc. If you are unsure about what you can do for your test pattern, come and see me for help.
Other Assignments
There will be some other items you will need to include in your sketchbook to build up skill knowledge or prepare you for future art classes. These can be included as part of your sketchbook assignments or as a separate section. There are several listed below, but there may be others added later in the semester. You will be informed if something is added.
Sketchbook Topics and Checks
Your sketchbook will be collected every 2 weeks with 4 completed pages for a quiz grade. The topics for each 2 week period come from the subject matter for projects. The topics can be completed in any order, but you may want to focus on the subject matter of your current project. For example, if you are creating a landscape painting, you may want to focus on landscapes for your sketchbook topic. Since most projects will last 3 weeks and sketchbooks are due every 2, you will not always be working on the same topic. This will be a good time to explore subjects what you may choose for the next project. Sketchbooks can contain anything related to the topic. Write notes to yourself or about the art/an artist. Study and record media exploration, artist, and styles. Print examples and try techniques. You may draw, paint, collage, etc. Each page should be full. Don't worry about neatness. These are meant to be planning, practice and research journals ad not works of art. Label the top of each of the 4 pages as follows: Last Name/Topic/Due Date (ex - Lundgren/Animals/02.16.17).
